Having been employed in some fashion in the area of world wide web site construction for over 18 years (thanks Mosaic), a great respect for web standards has grown in my heart (and thanks especially to Mr. Zeldman). Recently, I’ve become a fan of responsive design and the mobile first effort. One reason I chose this simple default WordPress template is that the content layout compresses horizontally based on the width of your device’s viewport in a fluid design which is cued by media queries in a CSS file. What seems magical trickery to the common internet web browser user is enticing fun for those more curious about how their content is served.
As a professional web developer I am of the opinion that a web designer is one who is familiar enough with HTML formatting and CSS rules to implement their own designs in at least the most commonly used contemporary web browsers without dependence on a separate “web developer”. That being said, I personally enjoy doing the work that not only includes both extremes of the profession—in creative visual design as well as inventive software architecture development as well as working within a skilled team where the two disciplines meet.
